2 million more vaccines arrive from China

he Dominican government received 2 million Sinovac/Coronavac Covid-19 vaccine doses and 5 million syringes. The vaccines cost US$37,240,000. Vice President Raquel Peña explains the vaccines cost US$18.62 and have a transportation cost of US$0.63 each.

Vice President Raquel Peña and Public Health Minister Daniel Rivera were at the Las Americas International Airport to receive the shipment that arrived on board a TUIfly flight from Brussels, Belgium.

People’s Republic of China ambassador Zhang Run received the plane for the Chinese government.

The Dominican Republic has so far received 4,459,200 doses of vaccines, of which 4,318,000 have arrived from China through two companies, Sinovac and Sinopharm, representing 96%. From India, the Dominican Republic has received 50,000 Covishield (AstraZeneca vaccines) and 91,200 Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccines through the WHO/Covax Facility.

The vaccines will enable the continuing with the National Vaccination Plan. The country is in Phase II, with persons 50+ invited to get inoculated. The Ministry of Public Health is vaccinating all persons involved in the health care services, tourism industry, passenger transport and education services to get vaccinated, regardless of their age.

The government advanced that as of next week the vaccination plan would open to all those 18+ as part of Phase III of the plan. Public Health Minister Daniel Rivera has hopes the country will reach herd immunity levels in August.

The vaccines received from China have enabled the Dominican Republic to be in the top 10 vaccinated populations in the Americas.
