Dominican Republic: the country that first begins to celebrate Christmas

SANTO DOMINGO, DR. – Although in a majority of countries Christmas begins in late November or early December, in the Dominican Republic it began in mid-September.

In this country, one of the leaders in receiving tourists in the Caribbean region, the first step in Christmas was given by radio stations, which for almost a month began to broadcast music appropriate for the time.

Instead of the typical Christmas carols, here you can hear from here peppers meringues with picaresque letters referring to sunrises, parrandas, drunkenness and other festive situations.

Bachata in lethargy

It is curious that although the bachata is a Dominican musical genre that enjoys popularity, at Christmas time it is reduced to its minimum expression due perhaps to its melancholic character, which does not match the festive spirit of Christmas.

The current one is the period in which the majority of the merengue orchestras “make their August”, since they are required to liven up the traditional festivals that many companies dedicate to their employees for this time.

Recently the Dominican Republic imposed the Guinnes record of the largest number of couples dancing synchronously merengue. If someone proposed it, it might also be necessary to assign it to the country that lasts the longest time celebrating Christmas.
