JCE suspends elections due to automated voting failure

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
The Central Electoral Board (La Junta Central Electoral) suspended the municipal national elections due to the failure of the automated vote, which prevented thousands of Dominicans from exercising their right to vote.

Julio César Castaños Guzmán said that the elections could not be held because the ballot was not loaded in the demarcations where automated voting would be used.

Elections were suspended throughout the country, regardless of whether the elections were held by automated vote or by manual vote.

He said they will begin a thorough investigation to determine the reasons why the ballots were not loaded. “We face the consequences with responsibility,” the president told a news conference at 11:11 in the morning.

It is a historical decision unprecedented in the political history of the Dominican Republic, which has held electoral processes with the regularity established in the Constitution of the Republic since 1962, after the fall of the dictatorship.

Problems with automated voting began last night, when JCE staff returned to the polling stations after 5:00 in the afternoon to try to “solve problems arising with the electronic ballot.”

Delegates of opposition political parties denounced that the teams had problems loading the ballot electronically in its entirety, and even presenting problems with the loading of the list of contestants.

This morning there were innumerable inconveniences to start the voting process in demarcations of the Great Santo Domingo, Santiago, Puerto Plata, among others.

From early hours there are long lines in the voting precincts, however people have not been able to vote for the technical problems presented in the automated voting teams.
