Dominican Republic. Marlin Martinez will be released next September, as his sentence was reduced today by the court that heard his appeal for the murder of Emely Peguero in San Francisco de Macoris.
Marlin was sentenced to 5 years in prison for hiding the body and abducting minors in November 2018. This Wednesday her sentence was reduced to only 2 years in prison.
The decision of the court was to free Marlin from the charge of child abduction, for which she had also been convicted in the first instance. The two years of prison refer to the hiding of the child’s cadaver.
His son, Marlon Martinez, was sentenced on November 7, 2018 to 30 years in prison, the maximum penalty for the crime of murder in the Dominican Republic. This Wednesday the sentence was ratified.
The teenager Emely Peguero was found dead in a suitcase on August 31, 2017. Her disappearance and subsequent crime caused a deep consternation in Dominican society.
Marlin Martinez was given his first coercive measure on September 2, 2017, so he fulfills the entire sentence imposed in September of this year 2019.
The Public Ministry and the complainant can still appeal the decision, having to go to the Supreme Court of Justice, to its criminal chamber, to be able to reverse the decision of the appeal court of the Duarte province.
