Miguel Vargas announces support for the eventual re-election of President Danilo Medina

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. – The president of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD), Miguel Vargas Maldonado, announced on Wednesday the support of the legislators of that political organization for an eventual constitutional reform project for the electoral qualification of President Danilo Medina, and warned that the alliance with the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) would remain “if and only if” the current president leads the ballot.

“Otherwise our party will take its own path with its own candidacies at all levels,” said the PRD leader at a press conference.

Vargas explained that the decision is strictly adhered to the principles of representative democracy, which is why he called on the political forces and their leadership “to calmly reflect, debate within the legal framework and demand respect for the free decision of the majority”.

“It is democracy, it is the people who have to decide if they will support it again at the polls. Let us then let the Dominican people speak, “said Miguel Vargas Maldonado, referring to a potential candidacy of President Danilo Medina.

Vargas also said that the legislators of that body, will offer their support before the presentation of an eventual constitutional reform project.

“This is why I want to tell the Dominican people that, in the event of a constitutional reform project that contemplates the electoral qualification of President Medina, the legislators of the Dominican Revolutionary Party will give their support,” he added.
