President Asonahores reports coronavirus begins to impact DR tourism industry

SANTO DOMINGO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. – The president of the National Association of Hotels and Tourism, Paola Rainieri, reported that the effects of the coronavirus are already beginning to be felt in that industry, which this month will not receive the entry of around eight thousand Italian tourists and cancellations of reservations locally .

However, Rainieri made it clear that the Dominican Republic continues to be the safest destination for foreign visitors.

He indicated that by the end of the month is when there is a detailed report of the real impact that this disease is produced in the national tourism industry.

“Clearly, the reception of flights from Italy creates a drop, about eight thousand, and there have been cancellations in the city. It is not a larger number yet, but depending on how international events related to global health continue to occur, we will know if its impact will be minimal or much greater, ”he told N Digital.

Rainieri defined as very important the measures taken by the authorities and the rigor in the application of the protocol on the coronavirus, which has allowed only five cases of infection to be registered, corresponding to foreigners or Dominicans who have arrived from abroad.

“All cases are imported by foreigners or Dominicans who were abroad, which means that the virus does not seem to be spreading locally in our territory yet,” he said.

He said they continue to work hard alongside the Minister of Health, the Minister of Tourism and the World Health Organization to keep the disease under control.
