Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. – The Secretary of State of the United States, Michael R. Pompeo, said Thursday that he receives with satisfaction the announcement made by President Danilo Medina not to opt for the third consecutive newspaper.
The senior US official said, in a statement released by the United States Embassy, that with that attitude the head of state shows confidence in the will of the people and is a good omen for the future of the country.
“We hope that the future leaders of the Dominican Republic and the leaders of the region will look at President Medina as an example of political management and deference to a system of government by and for the people. The United States supports the Dominican people and their democratic future, Pompeo said in the statement.
Earlier, Pompeo had praised President Medina in his Twitter account and considered that in this way the Dominican ruler shows his commitment to democratic, constitutional and rule of law principles.
“The people of the Dominican Republic and the world will see their example as a leader who has faith in the will of the people,” Pompeo wrote.
On June 10, the US official spoke with President Medina via telephone and they discussed the importance of preserving democratic institutions, the rule of law and the Constitution.
